August 2011

Junior Academy teams enjoyed success at 2 recent Inter-Academy shows.

At Weston Lawns on August 16/17th our team of Laura May, Fran Poole, Hanna Arnold and Jess Nutbeam were 5th in their hard fought class, but for an unwanted 4 faults they would have been 3rd!!

At Summerhouse on August 24th Area 42 ran their annual inter-academy show. Our teams were great, we were 1st  (A team) and 3rd  (B team) in the horses class. Teams were: A team – Sophie Hammond, Laura May, Fran Poole and Hanna Arnold and the B team were Ella Nutbeam, Katie Ford, Laura May, Lucinda Norton.

In the 14.2 1.05 class we also won with the team of Lizzie Hammond, Esme Harrell, Jasmine Head and Ruby Brown.

Elizabeth Whittle and Esme also rode in earlier team classes that were made up with Area 42 riders and were in the rosettes in each class.

I would like to congratulate all our team riders for their great performances and team spirit, I am sure everyone enjoyed themselves.

Last weekend saw the Equissage Discovery Regional Final take place at the Dorset Showground. With two qualifying tickets on offer for the Championship this was a heavily contested class. With only four riders managing to make it through to the third round Course Designer Samantha Pepperal had built a worthy course for a Championship qualifier.

It was twenty five year old Kathryn Ellison from Dorset that came out on top riding her own eight year old chestnut mare Summer Cruise III. The pair jumped three clear rounds in a jump off time of 46.76 seconds taking the first of the qualifying tickets which were on offer to compete at the final.

Second place went to Emma Arnold from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Emma rode her own six year old black mare, Ruby Tuesday IX who was the only other combination to jump three clear rounds securing her place in the final.

Johnson groomed for international success

YOUNG Cheltenham rider Katie Johnson has been making the most of her time on the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Regional Foundation Squads, which aims to spot future equestrian stars.

The squads, set up via funding from Sport England and co-ordinated by the BEF, aim to identify and support talented riders, between the ages of 16-24, who show the potential to progress to international sporting success.

  Katie Johnson

Johnson, 19, was selected for the South West show jumping squad back in September 2009, after being seen competing in a Horse of the Year Show qualifier. "The squad has been fantastic and the main reason for my progress," said Johnson. "I've received training with top coaches such as Ros Morgan, Di Lampard, Corinne Bracken and Tony Newbury and had the opportunity to attend sports science days and be part of the talent development group at Bath University.

The squads run on a two-year programme and Johnson plans to re-apply in 2011 and would like to encourage other young riders in the area to do so.

"This year I am hoping to compete in as many National 1.30m and 1.40m Opens as I can, to gain Young Rider points and get on to the Young Rider ranking lists," Johnson added. "I'm doing the UK Coaching Certificate and am passionate about my teaching. I would love to help dedicated riders who are in the same position as I was, as I really believe that if you work hard enough you get where you want to be."

Johnson's story is an inspirational one as she has never had the funds to buy ready made rides and has often had to work without a trainer due to financial constraints.

"The only ponies we could afford were all very novice or difficult but they all turned out to be great jumping ponies. Limited funds meant I never really had a trainer – just my very helpful mother Lois – but I set my own goals and was always thinking of ways to improve."

When Johnson moved off ponies she bought Damigo Z, a 16.3hh seven-year-old Belgium Warmblood, again a complete novice. "He stood out as he was so genuine and at the time I just wanted to have fun," she said. "No one realised he had such talent and we pretty much grew together. I have a fantastic partnership with him – he's not only a fantastic athlete but my best friend."

Johnson plans to become more involved with the BS (British Showjumping) Area 41 (Gloucestershire) and support area rep Mitchell Moor in establishing a more structured training program for riders in the area. "I really hope I can continue to progress, and keep the partnership I have with this amazing horse. I have learnt a lot in the last two years and so appreciate all the help I have received."

The Area Show held on the 21st November 2010 at Hartpury was a very successful day for the show. The Committee would like to thank all the Judges, Course builders, Ring Stewards, Secretary and Helpers for giving up their time to help. And of course a big thank you to all the Sponsors of the classes and to Hartpury College who helped make the show possible with their fantastic facilities and generous sponsorship.

1.20m Amateur Classic HOYS Qualifier

Held at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre, Gloucester on the 17th July 2010.

The 1.20m Amateur Classic is a direct qualifier for Horse Of The Year Show and the class had a total of 112 starters with 47 going through to the jump off where 9 went clear.

1st place went to Valleska owned and ridden by Caroline Fitzalan Howard from Norfolk. Caroline had travelled down from Norfolk the night before and stayed over night at Summerhouse to compete in this her first Amateur Qualifier of the season. They have been consistant all season at 1.20m and have also been competing at 1.30m and at county shows.

Previous to show jumping they evented but loved the show jumping phase so much that it was decided to concentrate on this. Caroline has owned Valleska an 8yr old KWPN by Hors La Loi since she was a 4 year old and to qualify for HOYS is a dream come true.

2nd to qualify were Millie Monday ridden by Adrian Little. The 10yr old Irish Bred Advanced  Eventer is owned by David Broadhurst and has been at Adrians Worcestershire yard for 2 years. The pair mainly event but also do a lot of show jumping. This is also a first time qualification for HOYS.  Adrian who regularly competes at Summerhouse also came 3rd on 9yr old Intermediate Event horse Firecracker by Lugaus who he has had for 4 years. Adrian now in the lucky position of having to choose which horse to ride at HOYS as rules only allow him to ride one horse to be ridden at the final.

Steve Williams, Course Builder for the class commented: "Summerhouse Equestrian is run by a family team of Helen Gallop and daughters Sara and Rachel all of whom are passionate about show jumping - it is great that their considerable investment in top facilities have been rewarded with this their 1st HOYS qualifier."

"Caroline certainly dispelled the belief that you need a "late draw" to win a jump off - second to go she had every confidence in her mares capabilities as she stormed around taking the tightest of options, leaving everyone in no doubt at all that she had thrown the gauntlet down ! "

Sophie Hammond

Congratulations to Area 41’s Sophie Hammond, who made the line up in the top pony final at the 2010 Blue Chip Championships at Hartpury.

The 16 year old qualified both her ponies, R Hamlet and Magners, for the Blue Chip Pro Sparkle JC/JA Championship and took both into the jump-off.  Both again went clear to finish 4th and 8th respectively, a great result in a strong field.

Sophie was then among 80 starters in the Woof Wear Pony JC/JA Winter Challenge on the penultimate day of the Championships, and once more achieved clears with her two ponies.

In the jump-off first ride Magners was unlucky to fault at the very last fence but R Hamlet made no such mistakes, coming home a full second ahead of the field to win in style.

It was the climax of a great run for the Rednock School student as she also qualified R Hamlet for the John Whitaker International JA final at the British Open Championship at the NEC a week earlier, where the pair finished 10th over a huge 1.35m track.

Sophie now has the Horse of the Year Show Junior Show Jumper of the Year final as her next major aim.
