We are pleased to announce this exciting new membership initiative which British Showjumping are due to launch - ‘Club Membership.’ This will be available from 1st June 2011 and is aimed at grassroots competitors who currently compete at 70cms – 1.00m. Click here to view advert (pdf).

British Show Jumping

British Showjumping’s objective is to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where riders will participate for points, not prize money and all results will be graded so a full competition record is held for each horse/rider.  Points will be allocated to the horse/rider Combination and accumulated for a Regional Championship.  Riders do not have to compete in their own Region to accumulate points. This membership will be sold as a Horse/Rider Package.

Listed below are further details on the new membership which hopefully will make it easy for you to understand and answer any questions raised by members in your Area. Likewise, your Development Officer has been fully briefed on this new concept of membership so will always be available to help with any queries.

The ultimate aim with the club membership is to assist via development, guidance and training for these riders to progress into national level competitions.

Club Membership the Membership Product

All results to be graded – thereby giving a full competition record.

Club Membership includes two “National Tickets to Ride” allowing them to compete in two national classes per year to encourage progression to National Membership.

The Details

Horse/ pony can be registered with more than one Club member – results based on horse-rider combination.

Club horse/ pony can be registered as a National horse/pony simultaneously (providing they meet eligibility criteria).

Club Rider can be registered as a National Member simultaneously (providing they meet eligibility criteria).

Horses/ponies can only compete once in any class.

No stallions.

Any age rider on ponies (adults eligible to ride ponies).

Children can ride horses from the beginning of the calendar year in which the age of 12 is reached (FEI Rules).

Horses/ponies of any age may be registered, but may not compete before the beginning of the year in which the age of four is reached.

For an initial introductory 4 month period competitors do not have to be members to compete at Club Shows, competitors can register as Club Members up to 7 days after the competition and regain points won. Hence initially all unaffiliated can compete at Club competitions.

Club Membership Rules

Official requirements – minimum of 1 Associate Judge and 1 Assistant Course Builder

Basic timing equipment required no countdown timer or display clock/board required.

There are two types of classes which competitors can gain Regional League Points:

Option 1: NB. At Club Competitions the first round or first phase of the competitions, time faults will not be allocated instead there will be a time limit of 2 minutes competitors who exceed this will incur elimination.

A7 (amended, first round not timed, where there are insufficient clears to fulfil placings, lower placing will be decided by first round faults, equal faults will share placing and points will be equally awarded not split)

Single Phase

Two Phase

In these classes points will be allocated as follows:
1st – 12 points, 2nd- 10 points, 3rd – 8 points, 4th – 6 points, 5th – 4 points, 6th – 3 points. 3 points will be allocated to all those who achieve double clear; those who are placed will receive an additional 3 points if they have had a double clear.

These classes will run at 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 1.00m.

Option 2: In an attempt to encourage these competitors to achieve clear rounds and aid their development the second type of class is a Double Clear Class. In these classes the time limit is applied however there is no section against the clock. The aim of this class is to achieve a double clear, those who do will be joint 1st and will all receive 6 points.

These classes will also be run at 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 1.00m.

It is at the discretion of the show as to which of these competitions they choose to run.

Heights in “Jump –Off”/ Second phases can be a maximum of 5cm higher than the first round.

Faults

Second refusal (anywhere on the course) – 4 faults
Third refusal (anywhere on the course) – Elimination
Fall (anywhere on the course) – Elimination
All other faults as per British Showjumping rule book

Dress

Same as National Rules, however we are asking officials to apply these rules more leniently for these members who are new to British Showjumping. These members will be made aware of the dress expected of them however where there are breeches of these regulations we ask that you allow the individual to compete but make them aware of what is expected in future.

Exceptions to National Rules – Spurs may not exceed 2cm for any Club Rider.
All those on ponies are allowed to wear half chaps/ gaiters.

Tack

Same as National; Rule 102 - All those on Ponies – no Market Harborough, combination bits, Hackamores or Bitless Bridles

Recording Results

For Club Classes we will be recording all results including faults, in order to provide a true competition record for competitors, with a view to extending this for all levels in the future.

As a result of this it is imperative that results sheets are fully completed.

As Club League points are allocated on horse-rider combination the horse’s name, rider’s name, and associated membership numbers all need to be clearly identified on the results sheet.

Faults to be recorded using the following coding system:

Knock down: 4
Refusal: ④ (top left hand corner)
Elimination due to rider fall: RFE
Elimination due to horse fall: HFE
Elimination due to exceeding 2min time limit: TE
Elimination: E
Retired: R

Congratulations to Jill Walker who was presented with life membership to BS at Moreton show by regional rep James Loffett, I am honoured to have been able to assist in a small way in helping to arrange this. I know that all the Committee and members of Area 41 would like to say that this could not have been given to a more worthy and hard working person and is thoroughly deserved.

Jill joined the BSJA at 14 when she began competitive jumping at junior level, riding BLACK KNIGHT she was runner up at HOYS (Haringay) in 1956. Jill continued producing novice horses and jumped at county shows until the family arrived in 1967.

In 1965 she started Cam show she was secretary for 35 years, during which thousands of pounds were raised for cancer charities.

Jill began judging in the late 60s under the guidance of the late Beryl Doney (Jon's mother) and has since judged regularly at the west country county shows and has recently been successful in getting showjumping re-instated at the three counties show.

She has  also been a regular showjumping judge at many events including Gatcombe, Blenheim, Barbury and Badminton.

She was deputy area rep for Area 41 (to the late Lady Mary Rose Williams) for many years before succeeding her for some ten years before handing over the reins to Helen Rowe: still remaining on Area 41 committee as treasurer.

Her ambition to judge at HOYS was realised some ten years ago, she has maintained her involvement at grass roots level by officiating at pony club and riding club activities.

PRESS RELEASE

BRINGING BRITISH SHOWJUMPING INTO THE 21ST CENTURY

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the British Showjumping Association on the 16th August will potentially see the beginning of the biggest change in the history of British Showjumping.

Modernising the sport will involve many changes not least a radical decrease in the size of the Board and the formation of a Sporting Council.

The Board will comprise of eight skill based individuals five of whom will be elected by the Membership and appointed as Members’ Directors, one of whom will always be the Member voted Chairman of the Association.  During these instrumental changes it is important that continuity is maintained in respect of Performance Strategy and it is with this in mind that the Member voted International Performance Director will retain their position on the Board until 2012 alongside the current Chairman. The remaining three Board Directors will consist of employees of the Association namely the Chief Executive, National Director of Sport and the Finance Director.

Sitting below the Board will be a Sporting Council made up initially of the existing Executive Board Members plus regionally/branch elected stakeholders. The purpose of the Sporting Council is to bring forward and develop initiatives for the sport and input into the future strategy of the organisation.  The stakeholder groups to be represented on the Council are: National rider, International rider, Show Organiser, Official, Coach and Owners/Volunteers.

Working Parties rather than the current committee structure will be appointed as the need arises and will last purely for the duration of the project required.

For best practice, a permanent Audit Group will be appointed whose role is to review the Association’s financial position. This group will consist of one Members’ Director who will head the group, one Member of the Sporting Council and one other independent individual.

Elections for the remaining three Members’ Directors positions and vacancies on the Sporting Council will commence shortly after the AGM if these proposals are passed.

These proposed changes will give members a better route of communication and greater involvement in initiatives being considered whilst also having in place a skill’s based Board to ensure the governance of their Organisation. The Membership should be re-assured that with these proposed changes they are still very much in control of the sport via the pivotal role the Membership will play in electing individuals at both Board and Sporting Council level that can add value in strategically directing the sport forward whilst assisting with national delivery of objectives.

1.20m Amateur Classic HOYS Qualifier

Held at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre, Gloucester on the 17th July 2010.

The 1.20m Amateur Classic is a direct qualifier for Horse Of The Year Show and the class had a total of 112 starters with 47 going through to the jump off where 9 went clear.

1st place went to Valleska owned and ridden by Caroline Fitzalan Howard from Norfolk. Caroline had travelled down from Norfolk the night before and stayed over night at Summerhouse to compete in this her first Amateur Qualifier of the season. They have been consistent all season at 1.20m and have also been competing at 1.30m and at county shows.

  Caroline Fitzalan with Valleska

Previous to show jumping they evented but loved the show jumping phase so much that it was decided to concentrate on this. Caroline has owned Valleska an 8yr old KWPN by Hors La Loi since she was a 4 year old and to qualify for HOYS is a dream come true.

2nd to qualify were Millie Monday ridden by Adrian Little. The 10yr old Irish Bred Advanced  Eventer is owned by David Broadhurst and has been at Adrians Worcestershire yard for 2 years. The pair mainly event but also do a lot of show jumping. This is also a first time qualification for HOYS.  Adrian who regularly competes at Summerhouse also came 3rd on 9yr old Intermediate Event horse Firecracker by Lugaus who he has had for 4 years. Adrian now in the lucky position of having to choose which horse to ride at HOYS as rules only allow him to ride one horse to be ridden at the final.

Steve Williams, Course Builder for the class commented: "Summerhouse Equestrian is run by a family team of Helen Gallop and daughters Sara and Rachel all of whom are passionate about show jumping - it is great that their considerable investment in top facilities have been rewarded with this their 1st HOYS qualifier."

"Caroline certainly dispelled the belief that you need a "late draw" to win a jump off - second to go she had every confidence in her mares capabilities as she stormed around taking the tightest of options, leaving everyone in no doubt at all that she had thrown the gauntlet down ! "

British Showjumping is pleased to announce that Iain Graham will assume the role of Chief Executive from Diana Cornish as of the 1st May 2010.

Having joined British Showjumping in 2009 as Head of Sport & Performance, Iain has worked closely with Diana Cornish, the Management and Executive Boards in addition to the Committees that preside over the sport from Grassroots through to Championship level.

Iain commented “I am absolutely thrilled to have been offered this position and am looking forward to continuing with the progression of our sport during such an instrumental period in the lead up to London 2012 and beyond.  British Showjumping is going through a period of change at the moment and I feel fortunate to be accepting the post at this time.

Chairman Michael Mac, commenting on behalf of British Showjumping further added “We are extremely pleased that Iain has accepted the position of Chief Executive.  Iain’s commitment and focus on delivery is second to none as is his innovative and structured approach to change.  I speak not only on behalf of myself but also the Management and Executive Boards when I say we welcome him into this role and are looking forward to working alongside him for a long time to come”.
